UK Mountains Walking, Mountaineering and Equipment Reviews
Watlington to Wendover

After too much breakfast I set off around 8:45am to retrace my steps back up to the Ridgeway about 1km away. The first section was a long straight track in and out of woodland which was quite pleasant and easy going. The threatened rain kept off for the first couple of hours but started as I approached Chinnor requiring a stop to don full gear. It was going to be one of those days, almost as soon as it started, the rain stopped and I found myself far too warm so stopped again to remove the gear.

From Chinnor some interesting walking around a hill and woodland and quite a stiff climb up bought me to higher ground and better views across the Chiltern Hills. Red Kite were buzzing around hunting for food as I progressed towards the next climb of Lodge Hill. At least this section had variety with some good pulls and changing scenery.

Soon enough Princes Risborough came into view but was neatly avoided although there was a short road section where once again the heavens opened long enough for me to put on waterproofs only to take them off again ten minutes later.

The route winds it's way around the South East of the town before heading up Kop Hill, a surprisingly hard climb which was rewarded by superb views, a seat and the sight of several Red Kite hunting along the ridge.

In and out of woodland following contours the route passes close to Chequers; the Prime Ministers country residence, made more obvious by the frequent 'come close and we'll nick you' signs.

Further round Coombe Hill appears, notable for its monument to British (and other) soldiers killed in Africa 1899-1902 and also for the fact that strong winds and rain made their presence known long enough for me to put on waterproofs.

From there it was a steady descent to Wendover and into the town to end my fifth day on the trail.

Today I walked 18 miles in 6 hours and 20 minutes. I think the pace was a little slower than previous days due to the amount of uphill but also that I didn't stop my timer each time I stopped, and I stopped more frequently due to the showers.

The hotel was very pleasant with a nice big room, good bathroom and huge TV. For dinner I walked over the road and had a pie and chips as I didn't fancy anything from the hotel.
