Kilimanjaro Day 6 - Ascent to Forest Caves (3,000m)
Route

I was woken early by Andy telling me that Pete had suffered an electric shock in the shower! Must have been all the rain we had yesterday. He was okay but obviously not happy. Breakfast was bacon, sausage and egg which was nice but the portions were a bit stingy compared to that we had enjoyed on the mountain which was a bit ironic.

We had planned to leave by 8am but it was 8:30/8:45 by the time we actually got away. By 9:30 we had arrived at the Umbwe Gate having passed through many villages, some of them looked like they had never seen a white man before! At the gate, we had the usual form filling exercise and lots of sitting around.

Finally we set off with our new guide; Patrick. The first section was up a muddy but wide track which soon started to narrow to become single file. The rate of ascent was okay but quite steep. It was hard to believe we were in the African jungle but even so, I couldn't help looking around for slithery creatures - thankfully none were seen. We did hear a few noises from the bush but didn't see anything.

Lunch was in a small clearing and soon over - I think everyone was keen to get on to the camp. As we walked on we felt a little rain but nothing to worry about and I carried on in a T-Shirt and trousers but decided to put the cover on the rucsac just in case it got worse - it didn't, although the air was wet. Around 3:15 we arrived at the camp to the sight of tents being erected and various bags opened. We divided ourselves into pairs with me and Martin sharing. My bag was located and I set about sorting my sleeping system and general stuff. Of course, once that was done there was very little else to do until the hot water and hot chocolate arrived.

We spent the next couple of hours sitting around relaxing. I decided I needed a long sleeved top and Rab jacket as it was quite cool. My legs were still a bit cold but not too bad. Dinner was Spag Bol which was nice, made doubly so by my Soy Sauce which I had packed back in Moshi. Around 8pm I retired for the night feeling a little cold so was happy to be in my warm sleeping bag. The PJs are great but I haven't bothered with the silk liner.

The tent had been pitched at a slight angle so I felt myself sliding down but Martin and I had the foresight to locate our bags in the middle so I had them to slide against which actually was fine. I didn't sleep all that well but no real surprise there!
