Kilimanjaro Day 9 - Ascent to Arrow Hut(4,800m)
Route

Up and sorted by 8:30 in reasonable sunshine. As we ascended it cooled off more to the point where I decided I needed my Stellar windproof on. At one point it warmed again so I could remove it but then chilled again - where are we? Just like being in the UK! The top stayed on as we had a snow flurry, not enough for Rab and gloves thankfully. We could see the Lava Tower away to our left and the small campsite beside it, which actually is quite a large camp site but made to look small by the huge tower beside it.

Onward and upward into the cloud where suddenly the outline of a small building came into view - turned out to be the camp toilet! We were at Arrow Camp and well pleased as it seemed to take no effort at all to get there. It quickly felt cold though with no walking to keep us warm so on came the Rab Jacket.

After a quick bed making session and kit faff I headed into the communal tent which felt much warmer. Lunch soon arrived of chips with eggy bread plus a nice soup - excellent.

At Arrow Camp

After lunch, more faff to get everything as well organised as possible for tomorrow as we have a very early start, probably midnight wake up and a 12:30-01:00am depart. Don't want to be looking around for stuff at that time of day. I've sorted clean socks and shreddies plus thermal layer, Stellar mid-layer and windproof, with Fjallraven trousers and full waterproofs. I'll probably not start in the Rab Jacket but take it just in case as the temperature will fall from our start time to a low at about 5am then warm up again. Also I have my spare head torch with me plus I will take extra batteries. In the rucsac I've put loo roll, first aid kit, spare T-Shirt for when it is warm on the way down, two water bottles, camera and gloves (at the top) ready to put on when I get out of the tent. On my head I will have my Russian hat, crash helmet and main torch. Oh yes, in the rucsac also goes headband and walking hat for lower/warmer walking. I'm feeling a little chilly at the moment but do have my thin Rohan trousers on so not too surprised.

Dinner was quality again - spag bol with veg. We all retired by about 7pm to await the midnight wake up.
