Day 8 Thame to Lungren

Maximum Altitude: 4,381m

Another reasonably early breakfast at 7:00am and we were away by 8:00am. Todays route followed the valley formed by the Bhote Koshi Nadi river climbing very steadily from 3,800m to Maralung for lunch, which, being 10:30am was more like a mid-morning snack! Today it was fried potatoes and rice, surprisingly good but needed to be consumed quite quickly as it was noticeably cooler than yesterday.

Walking up the Bhote Koshi Nadi Valley

For the afternoon trek, I kept my long sleeved Berghaus top on in addition to the T-Shirt and was just about warm enough, even though we were still climbing. The clothing plan for tomorrow will need careful consideration as it may be much colder and of course, once the big bags are packed, they disappear for the day.

The final walk up to Lungren took just over an hour which was quicker than I expected. The Lodge was incredibly basic with small rooms but featured en-suite holes in the ground. Some of the rooms had a really bad smell - clearly the toilet had recently overflowed! Those whose rooms were affected insisted on moving and who could blame them!

We had arrived by 1:30pm but after yesterdays' exertions, this afternoon became a serious chill-out so after sorting my gear, went for a coffee and, for the first time on the trip, had a Snickers bar which went down a treat I have to say.

A quick tour round the lodge yielded no washing facilities, but hot water could be made available on request. The downside is that washing had to be done outside where it was distinctly cool. Wet wipes would be my saviour yet again.

As the day wore on, it got progressively colder to the point where I changed from my lightweight Rohans to my heavier weight Stellar trousers and my T-Shirt to a Thermal base layer, Stellar mid-layer and Stellar Jacket. I really was the 'Stellar Kid'. That kept me warm enough for the rest of the day.

Dinner was vegetable chow-mein which was really nice and the Yak-Dung heater was put on so we had a toasty evening until, of course, we had to make a dash for the bedroom at around 8:15. Oh well, at least I won't have to go outside for a pee!
